International Night

Hello, fellow co-op family. That is really what if feels like after sharing so many meals together. I pray you feel the same. As I type this and consider next weeks dinner theme, I noticed blue sky breaking through the clouds. What a beautiful sight! I say we have a "blue" food night. Nah, just kidding. We can't all fill up on blue raspberry Jello no matter how hard we tried. Instead, let's have an International night. What is your specialty or your heritage? Maybe it's Greek, Italian, or German. How about Mexican, French or Chinese. Don't forget Canadian. (Yes, there are dishes that are truly Canadian fare.) Oh, I can't wait to taste your families favorites from around the world. If you feel so inclined to provide us with some supplies rather than throw together a Tourtiere, we are in need of forks, cups and Splenda packets. Just a reminder, last time we met, the children were given an informational packet on the science fair with a parents page and everything, :-) If you did not get one, please see me 3/16. Dinner

Oh how I hate I had to miss last weeks dinner. I've heard that Chinese Take Out was a big hit. So many of you have told me how much you enjoyed it and how much fun it was. That has been so good to hear. I'm still looking forward to my Chinese food. Due to illness we did not get to celebrate Valentine's Day in our usual manner. Please pray for our health, especially our little Cecilia as we have to take her back to Savannah on Monday for more blood work. As I type this, her fever has returned.

Now on to next week's dinner. We have all at one time or another looked for ways to make dinner quick and delicious. And many times when we've reached this point we grab that infamous can of Campbell's soup and whip up something our mothers used to make or the recipe we saw on the can. You can usually spot one of their recipes in your favorite magazine or, if you're like me, you own the cookbooks. Now you can even find them online. So, next week see what you can do with a can of Campbell's soup. I don't want everbody bringing a green been casserole either. Surprise us with something we might not have tried, but we'll love it when we do. Have fun with it and, hopefully, I'll see you around the dinner table.

I love a traditional pot luck dinner and last week's dinner did not disappoint. Some brought old favorite recipes to share. Others showed up with a new recipe they wanted to try and declared us their "guinea pigs." That's funny! I thought last week was all about groundhogs. Oh well, I enjoyed every bite.

I have a story to share before I tell you the theme. You see, Chris and I have always tried to avoid the commercialism that surrounds most holidays. When we got married 22 years ago, we decided that we would not buy gifts to exchange on Valentine's Day. Rather, we would make it a point to do something special and make it a tradition. And so we have. Every year I pick up a movie and he picks up take out Chinese food. We pull out our fine china and watch the movie while we dine by candlelight. (Mushy, isn't it.) So, even though it will be after Valentine's Day when we get together again, can you guess what our theme will be? That's right, Chinese.

Please remember, as you plan your dish, that Melissa has invited those who are interested in learning more about the Co-Op to join us for dinner. So, make a little extra and I'll see you around the dinner table.

In Co-op science we have also talked briefly about the simple machines covered in the Inventions and Technology class (Kid's Life), but have been focusing on the scientific method and how to acknowledge a problem, make a hypothesis, set up and experiment to test it , collect data and draw conclusions. Many have asked what was covered last time in Kid's Life class and how to get the homework...I am really bad about this blogging stuff, personally I have a love/hate relationship with computers in general...but I will make a conscious effort to get this stuff posted in a timely manner.

As for homework, I had worksheets of which I will have extra copies tomorrow for the kids to take home. It is important that kids bring a notebook (three ring or folder w/ posts) I spend a great deal of time helping the kids to get the homework home, the rest is up to you and a folder will make it easier. I will admit that I really didn't know what to expect when I invited the Co-Op family to bring their health food offerings to dinner last week. I was impressed. Such good food and so good for you. Thanks for the ideas. Now we need the recipes.

Our theme for next week was a great topic of discussion as we cleaned up last week. Many ideas were thrown around and laughed about. But, I don't think we every really cemented any of them. So, we are going to have a traditional covered dish. For those of you who desire to cook with ground "something or other" in recognition of Groundhog Day, and you know who I'm talking to, I look forward to experiencing your creativity.

We also have a need for plates, bowls and cups for our upcoming dinner. If you will be donating one of these items, please email or call me so that we don't receive too much of one and not enough of the other.

Co-Op Meal January 19th

"Brand new year! Brand new you!" What a slogan! Everytime a new year rolls around, we begin to make plans, set goals, announce resolutions, etc. So many of us have made decisions to live healthier and lose weight at the start of each new year that the gyms become overcrowded and the weight loss centers are packed.

Well, I have a different reason for searching out healthier foods. It is for my grandmother. During Christmas, my grandmother spent a week in the hospital with an infected gall bladder that could not be removed because of other complications. While there, she was also diagnosed with diabetes. Both of these problems call for special dietary needs. You add to that her already existing congestive heart failure and.... Well, you can see the dilemma. My mother cares for her and frequently I get cries for help, "What can I feed her?"

Thus our Health Food Fare dinner theme for our return to co-op on the 19th. Bring your best and healthiest one dish meal, entree, side dish or even, yes even, dessert. Think diabetic friendly, heart healthy and vitamin rich. I can't wait to taste your creations and dine with ya'll again. I'll see you around the dinner table.

Our last day of CO-OP before the Christmas break will be this Wednesday, December 15. Hope you all can make it this coming Wednesday. We appreciate all the hard work the teachers have been doing with our kids so far this school year. I know my children have learned so much from each of their classes. I have also enjoyed all the meals that have been brought for our families to enjoy each time we meet. We appreciate Heather and Amy organizing our dinner time together.

We will be returning on Wednesday, January 19. This will give you a little longer break then what was planned when we first started at the beginning of the school year. Please enjoy your break and be ready to meet again on Wednesday, January 19.

Co-Op Christmas Party

'Last week we shared "a few of our favorite things" for our co-op dinner. I now have some new favorites. I hope you found some too.

I love to celebrate Christmas and I love hosting parties during this time of year. Sitting by the fire, sipping hot chocolate, sharing stories of Christmases past, reading the account of Christ's birth to the children, singing Christmas carols, exchanging ornaments or baked goods. . . . So, in the spirit of the season, let's have a Co-op Christmas Party. Finger foods and party fare will be our menu for next week. While there won't be a fire to warm our toes or a tree to gather around, we can still share stories and enjoy the fellowship.

Thank you to those who have been supplying our paper products, cups, utensils and powdered drink mixes. We are again in need of forks, spoons and bowls.

I would also like to thank those of you that have been pitching in to help clean up. We are so grateful for your contribution.

How the TV works...the ins and the outs. We discussed the process of being able to view TV and our brain's amazing ability to assemble dots (pixels) and take still pictures shown in rapid succession and view them as moving. Notes and homework sheet for class are available upon request, unless someone can tell me how to attach a document ??? Anyway, next Kids Life we will cover faxes, computers and the Internet....then on to transportation! I can't wait!

I, for one, would like to thank the first mom that stood in her kitchen one day trying to decide what to have for dinner and settled on serving breakfast. She should be hailed as a genius. Last weeks offerings for our meal were OUTSTANDING!

Next week we are going to Olive Garden. Just kidding! But, do not despair. You can still feel like you're there since next week's theme is Soup and Salad. And, if our previous meals are any indication of what's to come, it will truly be "all you can eat."

Other items we are in need of are bowls, cups and powdered drink mixes we can make on the spot in the event I forget to bring the sweet tea. (Never!)

Breakfast for Dinner

All I can say about the last co-op dinner is "bring on the Thanksgiving feast!" We celebrated a early Thanksgiving and it has whet my appetite for things to come. And, can you believe it? We didn't have not even one green bean casserole show up. I thought for sure there would be at least one. Thank goodness I only have a few more weeks to wait.

Next week we are keeping it simple again with Breakfast for dinner. Move over IHOP, we've got it covered.

Thanks to all of you that donated plates and cups. I will let you know when we need more. Thanks, also, for signing up and pitching in to help with clean up. Amy and I were done so early we didn't know what to do with all the extra time. It was greatly appreciated.

Inventions and Technology

We had a great time exploring the invention of radio, thanks to Mr. Tinsley of Community Radio in Yemassee, SC at 87.7FM. He came with his mobile station and the kids we able to broadcast from the van to the classroom, great fun. We explored the communication loop, the the difference between digital and analog, FM and AM and the impact of wireless communication.
Homework: Both classes were given a crossword puzzle/question and answer sheet on Alexander Graham Bell. The 5-8th grade class also need to answer the following questions in paragraph form: What was one thing that I learned in class about radio technology? What was the impact of radio's wireless technology on communication? Then either in paragraph form or Venn diagram, compare and contrast either (FM/AM radio) or (analog/digital signals), your choice. All four items were covered in class, but further research may be done. See you next time! Apologetics Experiements

In class on 10/20 we preformed two labs. The first was creating a fossil in minutes, not millions of years. Students used plaster of Paris which is made from natural materials, add water and then place an object such as a shell or leaf in the slurry. In about 30 min. the plaster had hardened enough to remove the object, leaving behind a print. The plaster represents the sediment and crushed limestone along with decaying matter from mollusks(a known hardening additive), the water, or deluge as recorded in scripture during Noah's time and the object, a representation of the lifeforms killed and covered quickly in sediment during the flood. Added with the pressure of many layers of sediment, we have a current fossil record of life from years past. I explained to the children the reasoning behind the geological timeline used by Evolutionists to support the progression of lifeforms. From a Biblical view we can see the progression from trilobites, mollusks and other invertebrates to various sea creatures in the fossil record followed by reptiles and birds who would have had an easier time escaping the rising flood waters. Finally, the large reptile and mammal layer to include human remains. It isn't a picture of when the creatures existed, but the succession of burial.
That brings us to the 2nd lab. Using a bag of 15 bean soup mix and a bag of rice, students made predictions as to how they would "layer up" in water. Students should have written a hypothesis like so: If the mixture is put in water and stirred, then allowed to settle, the ? will be on top and the ? will be on the bottom. We will view the data and make our conclusions next time. Thanks for your time!

Field Trip, The Tempest

Where can you get engaging drama and realistic costumes with captivating sets....for only $12.00 per student ticket?

The British and American Literature Co-op classes are inviting other students/parents to attend the dramatic production of The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, at Bob Jones University on Thursday evening, November 18th at 7PM.

(Although there are other performance times, this was the only time possible for me and Stephanie Fowler to attend together.)

We will leave CBC at Noon that Thursday, and return late that night after the production. We will arrive in Greenville in time to have a leisurely meal before the play.

Click HERE for the supplemental assignment for those who would like it on plate tectonics. Keep in mind that the time line set forth by most scientist today is based on current plate movement. The reality is that it would take millions of years at the current rates, but they refuse to take into account the catastrophic world-wide flood recorded in scripture. This event and the unstable crust of the post flood earth allow for the current placement of the continents and landforms.

Also, as a supplement for our section on rocks, here is a cool website that will teach kids about the different types of rocks and their characteristics. There is even an interactive game to play to test their knowledge.

Remember parents, as our children get excited about science and ask questions, have no fear. See it as an opportunity to point them to the Creator of it all!

Italian Night!

The rain last week didn't dampen our dinner. Although we had to swim to the youth building, it was well worth it. Who knew baked potatoes could be so good.

If you missed last week, we missed you and we hope you can join us this week for our trip to Italy. Bring your best and creative Italian dishes and meet us back in our usual spot (the kitchen and fellowship hall).

Science Apologetics Class assingment 9/29
Some parents have requested some supplimental work to go with our classes. I will be sending out an email with an attachment for a suppliment to plate techtonics. There is an aswer key and everything, just for review. If you don not get this please email me personally and I will send it to you and add your name to the list.
Also, I am including a cool link, http://www.kidsgeo.com/geology-for-kids/ that has information about rocks and how to classify them. There is even a game for the kids to play once they learn about the characteristics of rocks. Keep in mind, the reason scientists say millions of years is because of current rates by which rocks are formed and plates move. They don't take into account the catastrophy of a world wide flood as recorded in scripture. The intense erruptions, errosion and heat caused by the "fountains of the deep" opeing up was like a catalyse that threw all know processes into fast forward, so to speak.
The assingmet for this weeks class, 10/6 is to find out the 3 major groups of rocks and how they are formed and some characteristics of each type. Make sure students have this in their notebooks for reference. If they would like to bring in samples to share with the class they may. See you Wednesday!

Co-Op Dinner Plans

This week, September 29th, our co-op dinner will be held in the kitchen of the youth building (near the covered pavilion). Our menu is slow cooker baked potatoes and salads. We need a few of you to bring potatoes already cooked and still in crock pots. Other folks can bring potato toppers (i.e., shredded cheese, sour cream, butter, chili, etc.), salads and/or dressing.

If you can contribute something to the meal, please email me at sallyannepetunia@aol.com or call 271-6162. And, I do apologize. I was wrong when I told some of you before that the potatoes needed no prep before going in the slow cooker. They do need to be pricked and wrapped in foil. They can be rubbed with olive oil and kosher salt if you so desire. Please plan ahead as the cooking time is 7 1/2 - 8 hours on low or 4 1/2 - 5 hours on high. Thanks for your help and I hope to see you there.

Homework: For the younger kids, research Samuel Morse and the telegraph...tell me about a great story involving a telegraph message, draw me a picture of a telegraph machine and label it or write about Samuel's life.
For the older kids, tell me what made the telegraph better than any forms of communication at that time and what changes to society you think the telegraph made. You may also draw a Ven Diagram to compare and contrast the telegraph to other forms of communication of the day.

Homework for 8/15 Apologetics

We covered a lot of material so next time we will review Pangea and plate tectonics. We will integrate different types of rocks and how they are created. There is a rhyme and reason to the chaos :) We are building a case for a young Earth as recorded in scripture. I gave the kids a worksheet to do on the back side of their vocabulary sheet. Answer the questions and do the research question. Make sure to site where they got their information on the Mariana Trench. Nothing fancy, just a web site or a book title and page number. I will try to post some video links on plate tectonics for them to watch and review ASAP.

Wow, what a start to a great year! Just wanted parents to know what I have assigned the children in class. Also, if your child does not have one yet, please send them with a 3 ring binder or folder with prongs for receiving handouts and notebook paper for taking notes.

Science Apologetics,which meets Wednesday evenings, we covered the 7C's of History to make sure we were all on the same page. When we covered catastrophe, the children didn't have a good picture in their mind about the fountains of the deep opening up and the force with which the earth as Noah knew it was destroyed. I would like them to research geysers. If you can find a video that shows the force at which the water comes out, that would great. If you have an artist, let them draw a geyser. Otherwise, have them write a few sentences about what they learned.

Kid's Life class: We covered a good deal of material in a short amount of time. From the first conversation (between Adam and God), to the history of the written word, paper and ink. Finally, we briefly talked about Johann Gutenberg and the printing press.

The assignment was simple; research Mr. Gutenberg and write a report. For the younger ones a paragraph would be fine. For the older kids, they needed more...Who, what, when, where and why? Who was Johann and why was his invention so important? Did he base his press on the work of someone else?

Children will be asked to share with the class. This is an important aspect of education. Public speaking, even in a classroom setting, is as important for the speaker as it is the listener :) I will take volunteers, so no pressure.

One thing we did not do in class,due to safety and time, was make a potato stamp. This is very easy and can be done at home. Simply slice a potato in 1/2 and let them carve an image out. Remember, it needs to be the mirror image or backwards, if they are writing a word. Then apply ink or paint, apply pressure and presto! Your own stamp, just like the printing press.

Hello, fellow co-op members.

What a wonderful beginning we had to our new co-op. The teachers did a great job on their first afternoon and we can't wait to go back next week. My son, Chase, was actually excited about having homework. So much so that when I sat him down for dinner in the fellowship hall, he and a his buddy, Ethan, pulled out their notebooks and started working.

We had a great turnout for our first potluck dinner and I have already heard from a few more that will be joining us next week. We've decided to try a theme dinner and our first attempt will be Southwestern. So far we have a taco bake, layered bean dip, and tacos coming. What will you surprise us with?

Co-Op Begins!

This Wednesday is the big day! Excitement is in the air along with many questions, I'm sure. Folks will be in the atrium early on Wednesday to get people signed in, take payments ($20), preferably cash because we will be working on a petty cash system, assign posts for those parents not already assigned one and answer questions.

That brings me to some needs for the co-op. Specifically, we are looking for those with the gift of administration. The co-op needs a treasurer; some accounting experience would be nice, but not necessary. Also, I would like to find at least one administrative helper for Terry Beach, who has graciously taken on the rosters so far. If you are interested in either of these billets, please let me know ASAP.

Make sure that you fill out your forms and have your students sign them. We covet your prayers and patience as we seek to equip the next generation and strive for excellence in their education!

Our co-op classes will begin meeting on Wed. Sept. 1st at 3:00.

If you have not signed up yet, please do so soon.

There is limited space in the writing class for grades 3-8. Also we now have two classes for the 4-7 year olds.

At 3:00 Erica Lawson is going to teach and guide children in creating their own books.

At 4:00 Amy Fitzgerald will teach seasonal themes while integrating history, art, science and reading skills with the theme each meeting.

You may sign up at CBC on Wed. evenings and also on Sunday mornings.

Fee is $20 per family and if you are not a member you may call 521-0626 to reserve a space for your student.

Payments can be made on the first meeting date.

Please arrive by 2:45 if you plan to sign up on the 1st of Sept. and be aware that some classes may be filled by that date.

Co-Op Information

Please know that we welcome any student no matter what school choice their parents have made for their child’s education. If you do not attend Community Bible Church we will make arrangements for you to sign up in the front office after the 1st of August.

Beginning Sept. Wed. Sept. 1st we will offer some classes for our school-age children. Any family is welcome to participate as long as they are comfortable with the guidelines we will follow. Sunday we will have the guidelines available in the atrium along with registrations for anyone interested. There will be classes for younger children that will be present with their siblings. The cost for a family is a one time reg. fee of $20.

This co-op will require that one parent remain with the child/children and assist in some way for the entirety of the classes. It will not be a drop-off ministry. Classes will be held on the alternate Wed. of our Woman’s Life meetings. In other words, we will meet on the 1st, 3rd and if a 5th Wed. of every month at 3:00. Your child will be able to participate in two classes. We also have a volunteer who is willing to organize a “potluck” dinner for any wishing to join. This has been planned so those who are participating can remain on campus, eat and then attend the Wed. evening service/children’s choirs.

Reading with discernment, responding to the literature by recognizing truth in the story, literary analysis, and applying the Biblical world-view will guide the approach to this course. True education includes learning that fuels godly imagination, that trains the intellect, and that develops God-given passions and convictions. This is what we seek.Students will read assigned books during the week and meet weekly for comprehension and critical analysis discussions and exercises. Vocabulary exercises, quizzes, and essays will supplement the reading and discussions.

Books at the beginning of this course include the following: From British Poetry: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Idylls of the King, Beowulf, Selected Canterbury Tales, Selected Poems of Alexander Pope, World War I British Poets; British Drama: Macbeth, Hamlet, Tragedy of Julius Caesar; British Fiction: Animal Farm, Great Expectations, Utopia, and The Space Trilogy.These are planned readings that may later be substituted. A few substitutions could be made based on student preferences or the class may be subdivided into book based groups: these are some available alternate books: Frankenstein, Pilgrim's Progress, and The Scarlet Pimpernel. To begin with, the first 3 books listed under British poetry should be borrowed or purchased for reading.

We will cover 1 book at a time and students will be expected to spend at least 45 minutes every day to read and complete assignments for class preparation.

Western Civilization: Ideas, Politics, and Society - * High School Credit - 9th -12th Grade

4PM-5PM weekly on Wednesdays at CBC.

From the ancients to 1789, students will critically examine the three traditions of Western Civilization within a political history chronology: the classical cultures of Greece and Rome, historical Christianity, and the Modern Era of Enlightenment. Religion and Philosophy will be emphasized. This class will be conducted weekly in a lecture format. Students will be encouraged to participate in discussion.

Primary source supplemental reading will be assigned through websites, downloads, and possibly selected portions of books. Students will have weekly assignments to be completed at home; some written work may be started or have assistance in class. Students may create a time-line, write essays, critical reviews of published articles, and at least one reflection paper.

Lectures will be based on a college textbook sourse: Western Civilization: Ideas, Politics, and Society - Volume 1: to 1789 by Marvin Perry, ninth edition.

Institute for Excellence in Writing Class - Grades 3-7

Led by Evelyn Owens.

Wednesdays on non-Woman's Life dates 4-5 pm.

DVD series will be used and students will have to purchase their own notebooks. The level is called Student Writing Intensive Group A. You can check this out at the website for the institute. After viewing DVD we will break up into smaller age ranges.

So that means these students will meet once a week for class as it will be taught in such a way that your student can receive high school credit for his/her American Lit. requirement.
